Thuraya Raises Patriotic Spirits in Flag Day Celebrations

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 2 November 2017: Thuraya Telecommunications Company took part in the nationwide UAE Flag Day rituals today by conducting a flag hoisting ceremony in front of its office premises. Following the call of H.H. Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum to celebrate Flag Day, Thuraya participates in the tradition each year and hosts it at both the company’s Head Office location in Dubai as well as its Primary Gateway in Sharjah.

Thuraya’s Flag Day is a communal event that allows all employees to share in the patriotic activity. The Head Office also invited all its building tenants to join in the jubilations. This year, each participant was given a small flag to hold while the flag was raised and the National anthem played. The 20-minute ceremony concluded with a commemorative photograph.

Ahmad Al Shareef, Thuraya’s Chief Human Resources Officer, said: “It’s an honor for Thuraya to celebrate UAE’s heritage and patriotic spirit through traditions like UAE Flag Day. Additionally, it serves to build camaraderie among employees and our neighboring community, as we take a short amount of time to come together and share in a symbolic act that holds meaning to us all.”

LRIT Direct Dissemination service to be discontinued in 2018

Thursday, 02 November 2017

The main reasons for terminating the service are:

  1. The limitations of LRIT capabilities — The continuing significant growth in data volumes means that several data sets can no longer be accommodated on the LRIT direct dissemination transmission. This is particularly the case for the new GOES-16 data, which will be replacing the current GOES-East data towards the end of 2017.
  2. Cost considerations — In the future consolidated Meteosat Ground Stations configuration, there will be no LRIT capability and, due to cost considerations, there is no plan to set up such capability.

The LRIT Direct Dissemination service currently comprises the following data:

  • 30-min Low Rate SEVIRI image data
  • Meteosat Meteorological Products
  • Data Collection Platform (DCP) Messages
  • Meteorological Data Dissemination (MDD)
  • 3-hourly GOES East & West image data

The 30-min Low Rate SEVIRI image data will continue to be available via the LRIT FTP service. Equivalent, enhanced or higher resolution products are available from EUMETCast as replacement to those provided on the LRIT Direct Dissemination service.

As you can see from the Figure 1 below, the current EUMETCast-Africa footprint largely overlaps with the LRIT Direct Dissemination footprint.

Figure 1: Current EUMETCast-Africa footprint (until July 2018)

If you are already a EUMETCast user, you can use EUMETCast-Africa as an alternative to the LRIT Direct Dissemination service. If not, you may want to consider setting up a EUMETCast station.

Information on EUMETCast and how to set up a EUMETCast reception station can be found in our EUMETCast web section.

Please note that the current EUMETCast-Africa service will end in July 2018. The follow-on service will be provided,  starting in May 2018. The footprint of the new EUMETCast-Africa service is shown in Figure 2 below.

For more information, see the New EUMETCast Africa Service Technical Bulletin.

Another alternative is to use the LRIT FTP service, especially if what you need is the 30-min Low Rate SEVIRI image data. Registration for this service should be done via our Earth Observation Portal (EOP).

If you do not have an EOP account, simply create one and then register for ‘EUMETSAT FTP Data Access’ under ‘My Data Access’.

Wanted: a medical doctor for a cold adventure

Wanted: a medical doctor for a cold adventure

1 November 2017

Want to help humanity’s exploration of our Solar System? Do you have a medical degree and are not afraid of the dark or the cold? ESA is looking for someone to spend over six months in Antarctica running research to prepare for missions to the Moon and Mars.

The Italian–French Concordia research station sits on an Antarctic plateau 3200 m above sea level. So far south, the Sun does not rise above the horizon in the winter for four months. There is reduced oxygen in the air and temperatures outside can drop to –80°C.

Its unique location and extreme conditions resemble aspects of living on another planet. You will not be alone, however – up to 15 people spend the winter in Antarctica keeping the station running with scientists working on glaciology, astronomy and climate studies.

At work in ESA’s Concordia lab

There are no deliveries for six months, leaving the Concordia crew in isolation. Emergencies need to be handled on their own – much like astronauts in space.

ESA sends a medical doctor each year to research how humans adapt to living so far from home. Experiments include observing the crew’s morale, tracking their skills over time and monitoring how their bodies cope with the change of rhythm and closed environment.

ESA’s Jennifer Ngo-Anh says: “Each year we ask for applications from any of the 22 ESA member states.

“The experiments they run for us offer great insights into how astronauts will behave on long missions, and the stay in Antarctica is an adventure of a lifetime.”

Do you feel up to the challenge? Sign up through the link to the right, an ESA member state nationality and medical degree is required.

Intelsat, Gilat Add 4G Broadband Solution to Mobile Reach Solar Offering

Joint portfolio to deliver more expansion options for MNOs

LUXEMBOURG & PETAH TIKVA, Israel–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Nov. 1, 2017– Intelsat S.A. (NYSE: I), operator of the world’s first Globalized Network, powered by its leading satellite backbone, and Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd. (NASDAQ, TASE: GILT), a worldwide leader in satellite networking technology, solutions and services, announced today the availability of a joint managed services solution. The offering to mobile network operators (MNOs) consists of a simple solution that adds 4G broadband infrastructure to their networks.

IntelsatOne Mobile Reach Solar 4G provides an additional end-to-end managed solution for MNOs who want to upgrade existing Mobile Reach Solar 3G service or expand service footprints into regions where traditional terrestrial network buildouts are uneconomical due to reliability of infrastructure or geographic considerations. The turnkey, solar-powered kit, similar to the Mobile Reach Solar 3G solution announced earlier this year, bundles connectivity provided by Intelsat’s Globalized Network with Gilat’s industry proven VSAT system for small cell and cellular backhaul. The combination provides everything an MNO needs to deliver 4G service, including power supply, mono-pole, and all satellite and cellular equipment.

The Mobile Reach Solar 4G small cell over satellite solution will help MNOs satisfy growing demand for advanced cellular services in Africa, the world’s fastest growing mobile phone market. The ability to expand 4G coverage to more people is amplified by the higher power and greater efficiency delivered by the Intelsat EpicNG platform and Gilat’s efficient high performance small cell and VSAT. The broader availability of more robust Internet services will create more expansion opportunities for enterprises and small businesses that rely on the advanced applications supported by more robust Internet connectivity, and this, in turn, will deliver additional socio-economic benefits for all citizens.

“The introduction of IntelsatOne Mobile Reach Solar 4G is another example of where Intelsat EpicNG is providing critical broadband infrastructure for the deployment of wireless connectivity,” said Jean-Philippe Gillet, Intelsat’s Vice President and General Manager, Broadband. “Intelsat’s Globalized Network has supported 2G and 3G services for decades, and now our network can accelerate the adoption of 4G. The all-digital, high performance Intelsat EpicNG platform allows new innovation, unlocking new and faster growing applications for our customers.”

“We are pleased to join Intelsat in offering the mobile market a comprehensive broadband solution that includes our SDR (Software Defined Radio) small cell supporting both 3G and 4G service. The small cell is optimized to deliver the best results with our high performance VSAT, while keeping costs low and providing an excellent user experience,” said Ron Levin, VP Global Accounts at Gilat. “Mobile Reach Solar 4G enables MNOs to allocate resources where they are needed most, whether they want to expand their network’s reach or improve the performance and quality of service for current subscribers.”

Intelsat will be exhibiting at AfricaCom 2017 in Cape Town 7-9 November at booth number D60 and Gilat at booth C112a.
