KVH Announces CHARTlink for ChartCo, Delivering Charts and Publications to Vessels at Sea Seamlessly

Gigabytes of ChartCo digital content will be multicast via KVH’s IP-MobileCast content delivery service, eliminating cost and delay

Middletown, RI, and Lillestrom, Norway – May 31, 2017 – KVH Industries, Inc., (Nasdaq: KVHI), announced today that it is launching a new service called CHARTlink for ChartCo, in association with leading digital chart distributor ChartCo, to transmit charts and a library of navigators’ publications to vessels at sea in a timely and affordable manner. The two companies will be unveiling the new solution at Nor-Shipping 2017 in Lillestrom, Norway, this week, in KVH booth B04-20 and ChartCo booth C03-02F.

For ship managers and officers who need to know that their vessels are ready for the next voyage, CHARTlink for ChartCo is designed to ensure fast, affordable delivery of the updates needed to conduct safe voyages and comply with the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s regulations requiring the carriage of navigational data using an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS).

“We keep a close track of developments in satellite communications to determine the best solution for getting voyage-dependent content to customers who transit the globe on thousands of vessels,” says Martin Taylor, CEO of ChartCo. “Our evaluation of IP-MobileCast led us to conclude that it’s a great solution. We’re happy to be working with KVH on this joint initiative and new delivery method, and are confident our customers will appreciate its timeliness, reliability, and low price point.”

KVH will transmit complete chart data and publications on a weekly basis to subscribing vessels via its IP-MobileCast content delivery service. The CHARTlink for ChartCo service will be included at no additional charge to subscribers of AgilePlans by KVH, the recently introduced all-inclusive, no-commitment Connectivity as a Service (CaaS) offering. KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadband customers who wish to purchase CHARTlink for ChartCo separately can do so for a fixed monthly fee of $49, per vessel.

Licenses for access to the encrypted content will be available from ChartCo. The content available includes ChartCo’s proprietary digital products, which are used by more than 13,500 vessels today; and, as ChartCo is an authorized ADMIRALTY distributor, all of the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO)’s vector charts and e-publications.

With the advent of the IMO’s mandate that vessels must carry charts that comply with ECDIS— a mandate that is nearing the final 2018 deadline of a rollout that began in 2012—chart distributors and vessel operators alike face the challenge of ensuring timely chart updates while at sea.

Using standard satellite communications for full chart set delivery is economically prohibitive, with airtime fees potentially ranging into the tens of thousands of dollars per ship for one global quarterly chart set. In light of those economics, customers typically opt for courier delivery of a DVD or USB, but that method involves uncertain logistics and customs clearance expenses. One KVH customer calculated that the average cost and time of delivering a DVD to a ship was $100 and several weeks’ delay.

The wide range of chart content, e-publications and software that KVH’s CHARTlink for ChartCo is designed to deliver includes:

CHARTlink for ChartCo is the latest addition to KVH’s IP-MobileCast content delivery service, which utilizes multicasting technology to deliver news, sports, entertainment, training, charts, and weather content to vessels with no data transmission costs. To receive IP-MobileCast content, a vessel must have a KVH TracPhone V-IP series satellite communications system onboard, and an active mini-VSAT Broadband monthly airtime plan. Thuraya Keeps Mt. Everest Climbers Connected on Summit Journey

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 31 May 2017: Thuraya recently worked with service partners, Talia and NBS Maritime, to sponsor and support two climbers – Holly Budge and Dr. Atanas Skatov –  in their summit expeditions to Mount Everest. Timely, cost-effective opportunities to demonstrate satcom technologies and services in orbit are now available thanks to ESA’s Pioneer partner programme.

Currently, companies looking to prove that their new technologies and services work in space are obliged to search for opportunities in the market. This is difficult, costly and time consuming. Matching the opportunity to launch and validate with the requirements of a mission is a further barrier.

Today, Open Cosmos signed up to the Pioneer partner programme to become the first Space Mission Provider (SMP).

An SMP offers public and private customers a one-stop-shop service that covers all aspects of an in-orbit demonstration campaign. Open Cosmos offers full mission simulation, spacecraft design, integration, testing, launch procurement, frequency allocation, insurance and operations.

Project Sapion will help UK-based Open Cosmos to build upon their existing technologies and develop a service that offers customers cost-effective demonstration missions for payloads of up to 20 kg.

The first Sapion customer will deliver the payload to Open Cosmos for integration, test, launch, in-orbit commission and subsequent payload and satcom service validation.

Magali Vaissiere, ESA Director of Telecommunications and Integrated Applications, commented: “ESA’s Pioneer programme will support the development of the infrastructure and service that secures the future commercialisation of new technologies through in-orbit demonstration.”

Aspiring SMPs joining ESA’s Pioneer programme will increase the availability and scope of flight opportunities and boost European industry.

Eventually, SMPs could further expand, offering an extended suite of possible services by developing enabling technologies and working together with the wider European industry, service providers and suppliers.

ESA and Open Cosmos public–private partnership

Mrs Vaissiere and Rafel Jordà Siquier, founder and CEO at Open Cosmos signed the public–private partnership to launch the Sapion project at the UK Space Conference 2017 in Manchester.

“The Sapion project will establish Open Cosmos as an Space Mission Provider ready to offer a key enabling service that will act as a catalyst for innovation and maturation of space technologies for our customers. Fast access to orbit at a fraction of the price enables our customers to focus on their in-orbit data,” added Mr Siquier.

KVH Announces YOURlink for Delivering Corporate Videos to Vessels at Sea

YOURlink eliminates logistical headaches and costs associated with physical delivery of time-sensitive media

Middletown, RI, and Lillestrom, Norway – May 30, 2017 – KVH Industries, Inc., (Nasdaq: KVHI), announced today that it is introducing KVH YOURlink, a content delivery service that fleet managers and owners can use to distribute company-produced videos to all vessels in their fleet. The company will be presenting the new service at Nor-Shipping in Lillestrom, Norway, this week, in the KVH booth, B04-20.

A new addition to KVH’s IP-MobileCast content delivery service, YOURlink takes a process that once required weeks or months of shipping time and the cost of distributing DVDs or flash drives, and makes it nearly instantaneous. For crew onboard, YOURlink provides immediacy and impact, with videos easily viewed on the ship’s common-area TV and from the seafarers’ own tablets, smartphones, and PCs.

For example, when major containership manager Seaspan recently produced a video to emphasize the company’s dedication to safety, it sent the four-minute media file to dozens of vessels via YOURlink. “To get this video out to the ships would have taken at least a month if we had tried to use conventional means,” says David Kramer, director of procurement for Seaspan. “With YOURlink, the delivery was almost immediate.”

The video, Seaspan Safety in Action, had a great impact on Seaspan personnel, uniting crew at sea with those in support roles onshore. In it, a wife expressed her deepest concern. “I worry about his safety,” she said. “I count the days for him to come back. Even now I put crosses on the calendar.” Scenes depicting family life at home alternate with others showing operations on the ship where safety protocols are strictly observed.

Other types of custom media files that can be sent via YOURlink include training and procedural videos, corporate updates, or even a personal holiday greeting from a top executive. YOURlink supports all popular media file formats and durations, DVD-level quality, and multilingual subtitles. Reporting features built into IP-MobileCast enable KVH to inform the ship operator as to vessel delivery status and how many times the video has been played onboard.

“As we rolled out our core IP-MobileCast entertainment service over the last three years, we learned that our larger fleet customers were producing their own videos, covering all sorts of practical issues,” says Robert Hopkins, Jr., KVH’s director of IP-MobileCast services. “But they were stumped by the same two problems that IP-MobileCast already solved: delivering the content and showing it onboard. YOURlink distributes videos to vessels at sea rapidly, and presents them in our entertainment space, where crew already browse during their off-watch hours.”

To utilize YOURlink, vessels must be equipped with a KVH TracPhone V7-IP or V11-IP satellite communications antenna system, and have an active mini-VSAT Broadband airtime plan; some playback options require an IP-MobileCast Media Server.

There is a pay-per-video cost to send the media file, but there is no impact on the vessel’s monthly data allowance, connection speed, or airtime bill. YOURlink fees are quoted based on each customer’s requirements.

YOURlink is planned for release during the second half of 2017.

دبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة، 16 مايو 2017: أعلنت شركة الثريا للاتصالات المتنقلة عبر الأقمار الصناعية اليوم عن إطلاق جهاز الهوت سبوت الجديد، الثريا وي “WE” والذي يعمل عبر الاتصال مع أقمار الثريا الصناعية أو مع التردد LTE. وقد قامت الشركة بتطوير هذا المنتج بالتعاون مع شركة بييم كوميونيكيشن Beam Communications استجابة للطلب العالمي المتزايد على خدمة الإنترنت اللاسلكي «Wi-Fi».

 ويقوم جهاز الثريا وي “WE” بتوفير التقارب بين خدمات النطاق العريض للأقمار الصناعية وال GSM فهو أول جهاز هوت سبوت في العالم يسهل التجوال المرن بين مناطق التغطية الخاضعة للأقمار الصناعية والاتصالات الأرضية ليسمح لمستخدميه بالبقاء على اتصال مع الأهل والأصدقاء بغض النظر عن مكان وجودهم.

Thuraya Launches a Dual Mode Satellite & LTE Hotspot

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 16 May 2017:  Thuraya Telecommunications Company today announced the launch of the Thuraya WE satellite and LTE portable Wi-Fi Hotspot to meet the growing global demand for wireless data connectivity. Developed in collaboration with Beam Communications, Thuraya WE bridges the gap between satellite and GSM broadband services. It is the world’s first dual mode Hotspot that keeps users in contact with family and friends, no matter where they are.

The International Ocean Colour Science meeting advances new capabilities for global ocean colour observations in the Copernicus era

Under the theme “Exploring new capabilities for global ocean colour observations”, the ocean colour science community and space agencies will discuss the emerging applications and first scientific results of ocean colour observations delivered by the new Copernicus Sentinel-3A and -2A satellites respectively operated by EUMETSAT and ESA on behalf of the European Union in support to Copernicus, the European Earth Observation programme.

In particular the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) on board the Sentinel-3A satellite allows for tailored applications. Phenomena like harmful algae blooms and changes in marine ecosystems can now be monitored on an operational basis and on a global scale from space, creating new opportunities for the management of marine resources, fisheries and for understanding and quantifying the role of the ocean in the carbon cycle in our changing climate.

A dedicated Copernicus session will showcase the benefits of the new European ocean colour data streams available from Sentinel missions and the information services delivered by the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS).

Ewa Kwiatkowska, ocean colour scientist at EUMETSAT said: “Since we took over operations of the Copernicus Sentinel-3A satellite on behalf of the EU, ocean colour has been added to our portfolio of ocean products and we now offer a full real-time ocean data service integrating products from EUMETSAT, Copernicus and international partners’ missions”.

To stimulate user uptake, EUMETSAT will organise a one-day training workshop on 19 May on how to access and explore the Copernicus and other marine data Streams provided by EUMETSAT.

The data and products from EUMETSAT’s satellites are vital to weather forecasting and make a significant contribution to the monitoring of environment and climate change.

The European Union has entrusted EUMETSAT with exploiting the four Sentinel missions of the Copernicus space component dedicated to the monitoring of atmosphere, ocean and climate on its behalf. EUMETSAT will carry out these tasks in cooperation with ESA.

EUMETSAT has established cooperation with operators of Earth Observation satellites from Europe and China, India, Japan, Russia and the United States.
